Two things to do to change a habit
Just about everyone I meet is interested in getting better and yet many struggle to improve despite their best intentions.
This is why I believe in focussing on helping people change their existing habits and behaviours, which are often the barriers to personal growth.
According to research (Ottingen & Gollwitzer, 2010) doing two things significantly increases the likelihood of achieving goals.
☝️Firstly - consider your goal and the obstacles you expect to face whilst reaching them. People often think of their goals but skip thinking about the obstacles. And when they face the inevitable obstacles - they’re unprepared. .
☝️Secondly - define your goal as an “if-then” statement. “If” being a situation, “then” being the associated behaviour. For example : “If I notice that I am doing a task a team member could do, then I’ll ask them if they could take over the work in our next one-to-one.” .
What is the habit that your will change?
